Today is day 2 of our Overseas Immersion Programme, OIP and I am starting to miss my home back in Singapore! Although we are being provided with accommodation, nothing beats your own home. However, I shall persevere till the end, just like what the other batches did. Day 2 also means, orientation day for us. A quick walk through of the layout of the campus is all we need. We gathered at the classroom blocks first, before we were being taken to the various rooms that we will be having our lessons. We were also being introduced to the teachers and the students that will be teaching and hosting us for the whole trip. They were exceptionally friendly and welcoming towards us. The students are like student helpers to us. When we are in doubt or require assistance, they are there and ready with an answer to meet our various needs.
We also had a tour of the canteen and then we were being brought to a super mart that is a 10 minutes’ walk from the campus. The super mart is somewhat equivalent to maybe our Ntuc or Shop ‘N’ Save or even Giant. Most of the electrical appliance and daily necessity are available over at the mart. This proves to be convenient for the students living in the hostel in the campus.
We also had our lunch at one of the local restaurants
This toilet does not have a "handle" for you to flush, instead, a "pedal" is there for you to flush
Reflection
I felt that the help provided by the students from WUST is heart warming. They are very kind towards us and does not feel that it is a burden to take their own spare time to bring us around the area. It has been a feeling I had never felt for in a long time. Such feeling is indescribable, simply “magical”. When the teachers and students saw us, they were full of smiles and ready to make friends with us, which is a very good sign as we are new to the place, we are very unfamiliar to the surroundings and the people.
Another thing about China is that their customer service in restaurants deserves to be praised about. We had our lunch in a local restaurant, the waiter/waiteress are all very friendly and eager to serve us. Sometimes the service rendered in China is better than that provided back in our homeland, Singapore. Thus is a learning point, something that we singaporeans need to learn and nurture. The toilet in the restuarant is also a has something special to be found. Toilet flush are paddles for you to step on instead of a handle for you to pull. Signs are also pasted inside the toilet to remind users not to waste paper and water. Remember to spare a thought for other users. this is also not a common sight to be seen in Singapore. A smile might go a long way, a kind act might bring you more kindness.
